Campaign to save Post Office

28th March 2008

I am leading a campaign to save Fegg Hayes post office.  Today Post Office Ltd announced that Fegg Hayes is amongst those post offices threatened with closure as part of the Network Change Programme.  Nationally 2500 post offices are to close as the Post Office tries to reduce losses of £3 million per week.  Public consultation on the proposed closures begins in Staffordshire today and runs for a 12 week period.

I accept that some post offices must close but to close Fegg Hayes is a closure too far. In the previous closures called “Network Reinvention Programme” this constituency shouldered more than its fair share of cuts. Packmoor, Bradeley and Chell Heath were all closed. To now expect customers, many of whom are elderly, to accept this closure at Fegg Hayes shows that Royal Mail has not taken proper account of its own guidelines. Its consultation proposals are flawed. Residents fought hard last time to keep the post office open and we will fight hard again this time. I am standing shoulder to shoulder with Mr Singh who has bought the post office and shop and provides a much needed service there. I shall be enlisting the support of SOT Council and the PCT and local partners to make the case. I will be making a full submission to the consultation and I urge others to do the same.
