National School Sport Week is now underway. Britain’s biggest school sporting event will see nearly 14,000 schools and 5 million children take part in an exciting week-long celebration of school sport. Students from Holden Lane High School will also be taking part in School Report Sports Day and will be doing a radio broadcast for the BBC.

Joan expresses her concerns in the House of Commons, in the Local Government Financing opposition day debate, that cuts agreed by the Coalition Government will be felt disproportionately in heartland areas that have suffered a great decline in manufacturing, such as Stoke-on-Trent. Joan is particularly concerned about their impact on the Supporting People programme and the money providing care for people in the community and wants to know how this can be planned for.

Joan was pleased to cut the sod to mark the start on the new £14m health centre on Elder Road in Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent. The development will include a state of the art 2,665 sq m community health centre and a purpose built 1,668 sq m integrated sexual health unit, which will provide a range of specialist services benefiting communities across Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire.

The online shop can be found at www.staffordshireprints.org.uk and currently has a selection of images owned by Stoke-on-Trent Museum Service, which can be bought as framed or unframed prints or canvasses.

Joan is highlighting vschools, an exciting new programme delivered by v, The National Young Volunteers’ Service to support all state schools across England. vschools builds on the experience that v already has in engaging 16-25 year olds in volunteering. v’s mission is to make volunteering and social action a ‘must do’ for all young people which is why v’s work now extends to a broader group of young people aged 14 to 25.
